Click here for the January Newsletter The Frederick County Chapter Emergency Services Department provides services in two areas, Disaster Relief and Armed Forces Emergency Services. Disaster Relief Each year, nationwide, Red Cross paid and volunteer staff respond to more than 60,000 disasters, ranging from single-family house fires to major events such as hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes. The Red Cross helps hundreds of thousands of their neighbors by providing shelter and other basic and emergency needs – free of charge. In addition, Red Cross chapters are involved long before disasters occur, educating the community on how to stay safe should a disaster strike. In Frederick County, volunteers and staff provide assistance on disaster scenes ranging from house fires to hostage situations. Emergency Services volunteers train to provide quality service to those who have suffered a loss due to a disaster. Additionally, volunteers from the chapter respond with the National Red Cross to disasters throughout the country. At parades, community events, churches, schools and other organizations Emergency Services volunteers provide information to the community on preparing for disasters. See the Emergency Services Training calendar for course dates and descriptions. Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES) The American Red Cross, by congressional charter, coordinates emergency communications between armed forces personnel and their families. In the event of a death, illness, critical accident, or birth in the serviceperson's immediate family, AFES volunteer caseworkers verify the accuracy of the communication so that the serviceperson's commanding officer has accurate information upon which to base decisions about emergency leave. For information about volunteering in Emergency Services, email the Director of Emergency Services. |
